Aapo Huhta (b. 1985) is a photographic artist based in Helsinki. His work explores the terrain between documentary and abstraction through experimental image-making processes.
His most recent photographic series, Gravity (Kult Books, 2023), presents black-and-white portraits and traces of bodily forms that appear to hover in dense, impenetrable darkness. The series marks a turn towards a more abstract, existential, and materially unstable approach, moving away from the narrative- and documentary-based methods that had characterized his earlier works.
Huhta was named Young Nordic Photographer of the Year by Fotografiska in 2015 and took part in the Joop Swart Masterclass in 2016. In 2020, he was awarded Finland's Young Artist of the Year.
Photobooks constitute an essential part of Huhta's artistic practice, functioning alongside his exhibitions as an integral form within his photographic process. He has published four monographs: Block (Kehrer Verlag, 2015), Omatandangole (Kehrer Verlag, 2019), The Young Artist of the Year 2020 (Tampere Art Museum, 2020), and Gravity (Kult Books, 2023).
Huhta is also known for his freelance assignment works. His work has been published in Vice, The Guardian/The Observer, Bloomberg Businessweek, Stern, The Washington Post, Financial Times, Die Zeit Magazine, Dazed Digital, Morgenbladet, Paper Journal, Fotografia Magazine, Suomen Kuvalehti, Image and Helsingin Sanomat among others.
