His work explores the terrain between documentary and abstraction through experimental image-making processes, often using the human body as a central element. His recent photographic series, Gravity (Kult Books, 2023), presents black-and-white portraits and traces of bodily forms that appear to hover in dense, impenetrable darkness. The series marks a turn towards a more abstract, existential, and materially unstable approach, moving away from the documentary-based methods that had characterised his earlier works.Photobooks constitute an essential part of Huhta’s artistic practice, functioning alongside exhibitions as a primary form within his photographic process. He has published four monographs: Block (Kehrer Verlag, 2015), Omatandangole (Kehrer Verlag, 2019), The Young Artist of the Year 2020 (Tampere Art Museum, 2020), and Gravity (Kult Books, 2023). Huhta was named Young Nordic Photographer of the Year by Fotografiska in 2015 and took part in the Joop Swart Masterclass in 2016. In 2020, he received Finland’s Young Artist of the Year Award. Huhta is also known for his freelance assignment works. At first, one sees only monochrome, asymmetric fields of ambiguous proportions. Stark contrasts, crisp outlines. Black continents adrift, their dense mass rising out of a pale, primordial sea. Then, suddenly, one begins observing infinitesimal details. Subtle shading within the dark areas. Tufts of hair. As the brain processes the signals received via the optic nerve, Huhta’s works seem to transfigure. A three-dimensional space opens up within them, and the previously silent, flat forms gain mass and volume. They become bodies in the most prosaic sense of the word; that is to say, they become human bodies. Within a split second, the impression of immaterial abstraction has crumbled. This chain of events is inevitable. It is, after all, within our human nature to perceive our own species on the basis of the subtlest of visual cues: we see faces in the surfaces of celestial bodies, sex organs in flowers, and outstretched arms in the branches of trees. Once discerned, the bodies in Huhta’s works cannot be unseen. And yet, Museo is undeniably Huhta’s most obscure series to date. Known as an artist working with photography, he has gradually moved away from the traditional documentary approach of his early career. As it stands, Huhta is no longer concerned with depicting—or, indeed, capturing—any specific events or decisive moments in time. What has at some point taken place in front of the camera is not of any particular importance. Many of these new works are to be understood as literal photographs: they are drawings, graphé, made with light, phōtós, using analogue methods. By rejecting figurative norms, Huhta dismantles the established principles of photography. In Museo, he abandons realism and purposefully obfuscates the role of the camera in his creative process. He presents the human body in a way that leaves the viewer uncertain whether the image originates in physical reality at all. The restrained aesthetic and ambiguity of Museo carry an existential charge. Huhta frames the body as mutable organic material. This is a neutral fact rather than a lament over the ephemerality of life. Visual signs of ageing such as sagging, wrinkles, lumps and growths are not inherently sad, and their supposed ugliness is but a flimsy construct. In earlier works such as Omatandangole (2019), the human form has seemed to function as a representation of mankind. Such symbolism has been stripped away in Museo, with Huhta now first and foremost depicting the body as a biological entity. A quote from John Dewey succinctly sums up Huhta’s artistic practice: “Each medium says something that cannot be uttered as well or as completely in any other tongue.” This is especially true in the case of Museo, a work that is somehow both sparse and extraordinarily detailed. Such a contradiction cannot be translated into any other language—it only exists here, within the grammar of Huhta’s photographs.&nbsp; – Helen Korpak In the Museo series, Aapo Huhta approaches the camera less as a tool for documenting than as a means of gathering light. In these photographs, the human body appears as silhouettes, masses, and lines. In part of the series, bodies are placed before the camera and used almost as templates to form simple geometric shapes. Other photographs draw on gestures collected from various archives. Embraces, struggles, and dances are lifted from their original contexts until only the gestures remain. As identity fades, the body appears as a site where time leaves its traces, with gravity as its sculptor. Photographs for the series were shot between 2024 and 2025. This is what happens in the night. Night is not an object before me; it enwraps me and infiltrates through all my senses [...]. Night has no outlines; [...] it is pure depth without foreground or background, without surfaces and without any distance separating it from me. Maurice Merleau-Ponty: Phenomenology of Perception In his new austerely black and white work, Aapo Huhta fills his photographs with a darkness so impenetrable that it dissolves the horizon. This nocturnal void is inhabited by human figures that seem to be shrouded in milky mist or exist behind a veil of cosmic radiation. They are simultaneously both painfully corporeal and infinitely distant, almost like visual echoes from another dimension. These bodies give us no information on the space they inhabit, because their existence does not adhere to the familiar laws of physics. Three-dimensionality is at peril when Huhta partly dismantles the figurative tradition of the photograph. Through the use of analog processes and methods, he creates works that warp space and time in a way that borders on the grotesque. There is a sense of great urgency in the way in which the artist distorts the contours of the human body: these beings are above all to be described as mortals. The series Gravity sees Huhta progress along the path of existential discovery. His artistic work has always been concerned with man's relation to surrounding space, and has over the years gradually moved away from its documentary origins towards an increasing level of abstraction. The human figure is a constant subject in Huhta's photography, usually in a highly anonymized form. When reduced to merely a shadowy silhouette, as was the case in the artist's previous series Omatandangole, the individual body becomes a symbol for humanity and can take on a multitude of meanings. Gravity sees Huhta abruptly invert the colour scheme, moving away from the blistering sunshine of his earlier work. As day turns to night, the presence of death makes itself known. Gravity seems to take place just outside of the imaginary event horizon of a fantastic black hole, in a limbo where both matter and concepts are altered to the point of collapse. The disintegration of the body is exposed in all its terrifying beauty as Huhta rejects the norms of depicting the human individual. But embedded within the endless night of Gravity's outer space are clues of what lies beyond the final loss of power: the end is an enduring arid landscape. This, then, is what peace looks like. Huhta’s brand of camouflage is about invisibility, merging with dark, staying still, soaking up all light. These photographs seem to have fingerprints, or brush strokes. There’s an anachronistic pictorialist feel to them, like the rubbing and pushing of gum bichromate. Rather than recording the space before a lens, they pay homage to paint, sacred geometry, dream logic, and the weather system of emotions within the artist himself. hints for storylines in a murky, dystopic scene of the city witnessed by a stranger. Focusing on gray, concrete features with some people as spectators, narrowing down the elements in the frame, driven most often by the observation of the shapes the light creates, it alludes to a mute perspective toward contemporary city life and the people’s role in it.Simultaneously it is a story where the photographer plays the role of a protagonist in the big city that throws a newcomer into its infinite whirl of new people and peculiar surroundings. shells of gold and iron scaup eggs and the first human was born to a bored goddess impregnated by the wind. According to the same mythology, human life first began in a place called Kalevala, a region now known Kainuu, situated on the western side of the Finnish-Russian border.While Kainuu might have been the birthplace of all humanity, these days it is notorious as the area with the highest suicide rates in Finland. It is also a stronghold of the patriotic 'True Finns' party. It is a place where East and West clash. It is a place with tensions between the free market economy and totalitarianism. Finally, it is a place of steep population decline.With a group of four photographers, we explored this place and its people. Working as a visual collective, each member of the group was free to pursue their own photographic methods. We had the Finnish folklore stories in our minds throughout our explorations and our general aim was to glimpse a connection between the mythical past and whatever remains in the contemporary world. I drove until the roads became too narrow, and visited the houses I found at these remote places. I tried to encounter the inhabitants of these houses and convince them to let me into their homes for a short while.&nbsp; <img width="1280" height="1600" width_o="1280" height_o="1600"
